The Journey

Eight nights across Kerala's most restorative landscapes

Kerala is not one landscape. It is a sequence of them, from the Western Ghats down through the tea and spice country to the backwater network that runs the length of the state — 900 kilometres of canals, lakes and rivers that are not roads but waterways, where rice barges once moved the harvest and kettuvallam houseboats now move slowly under coconut palms.

This journey enters all of them. We begin in Thekkady, at the edge of the Periyar Tiger Reserve — where elephant sightings are common and the spice estates begin. We move to Munnar's high altitude tea country, then descend to Kumarakom on Vembanad Lake for the Ayurvedic programme. The journey ends on the backwaters at Alleppey — a night on a traditional kettuvallam, moving through the water world at two kilometres an hour.

The Ayurveda here is not spa Ayurveda. We work with an accredited physician to design a programme around your constitution and your goals. Minimum three nights is required for Panchakarma to have genuine effect.

Day by Day

Nine days in Kerala

Day 1
Arrival · Thekkady · Periyar
Fly to Cochin or drive from Madurai through the Ghats. Thekkady by afternoon — the air changes as you climb. Check in to your estate property. Evening nature walk in the buffer zone with your naturalist.
Days 2–3
Periyar Tiger Reserve · Spice Estates
Two full days in and around Periyar. Morning boat safaris on the lake (elephants drink here at dawn). Afternoon walks in the spice estates — cardamom, pepper, cinnamon, nutmeg growing together in the forest shade. Your naturalist can identify the wildlife by call before you see it. A spice estate lunch, and an evening of complete quiet that has become increasingly rare.
Days 4–5
Munnar · Tea Country · High Altitude
Drive through the tea estates to Munnar — the road climbs through Tata Tea plantations until the entire landscape is green and geometrical. Your property sits within or adjacent to a working estate. We arrange access to the tea factory at processing time, and a walk through the top estates at dawn when the mist is still in the valleys below. A tea tasting guided by the estate's taster. Optional: Eravikulam National Park for Nilgiri tahr.
Days 6–7
Kumarakom · Vembanad Lake · Panchakarma
Descend to Kumarakom on the shores of Vembanad Lake — the largest lake in Kerala, a bird sanctuary, and the setting for some of the state's finest Ayurvedic properties. Your physician consultation happens on arrival. The programme is designed around your constitution — your prakriti — and your specific restoration goals. Two days of treatment, rest, and exceptional Kerala cuisine modified for your Ayurvedic type.
Day 8
Alleppey · The Backwaters · Kettuvallam
Transfer to Alleppey and board your traditional houseboat at midday. The kettuvallam is built from natural materials — bamboo, coir, wood — and moves at the pace of the water. The afternoon passes through the canal network: children in boats, churches emerging from the palms, toddy shops at the water's edge, the immense flat light of the backwater sky. Dinner cooked by your boat's chef, moored for the night in silence.
Day 9
Departure · Cochin
Morning on the backwaters. Transfer to Cochin airport for onward travel. Optional: a morning in Cochin's Fort Kochi — the Chinese fishing nets, the Portuguese church, the Jewish quarter — before departure.
On Ayurveda

What genuine Panchakarma involves

Panchakarma is a five-part purification protocol developed over 5,000 years of Ayurvedic practice. It begins with an oil massage (Abhyanga) to mobilise toxins, followed by steam therapy (Swedana) to open the channels. Then the specific treatments: Shirodhara (warm oil poured continuously on the forehead), Nasya (nasal administration), Basti (medicated enema). The process takes a minimum of three days to complete a cycle.

We work with physicians who have trained in the classical tradition — not the spa tradition. The difference is significant. A genuine programme is designed around pulse diagnosis, dietary modification, and sleep protocols, not just treatment duration. What you experience is restoration at a level that is difficult to describe before you've felt it.
